Off-Season Plan, Brace Yourselves

Posted by inferno272 on May 15th, 2008

First off, if you have anything pressing to do, or have to even slightly go to the bathroom, go do all that stuff before starting to read this post. Its going to be long. Dare I say, gi-normous. This is my armchair GM moment of the offseason (well, at least the first one) and I intend to flex some mental muscles and give a long post on why I want to do certain things, and my rationale behind it.

First and foremost, it is important we take stock of the situation the Rangers find themselves in right now. A ton of holes, some salary cap issues, and a whole lot of unanswered questions. I figure step 1 is to paint a nice clear picture of what we have, what we need, and what cash we have to work with. This is basically the math section, if you want to skip all of it, just scroll down to the next horizontal line…

Total players needing to be addressed: 10

Ok, so now that we know exactly what we have to work with, we have to decide on what we should do with this club. First and foremost I have decided to waive or trade Christian Backman, as well as Ryan Hollweg from the team listed above. I am electing not to replace Hollweg, and to go with a 22 man roster rather than a 23 man roster. This adds 2.812 million dollars more to work with, bringing the total cash we have to 23.372 to fill out our roster.

Ok, now we have to make our decision, how do we want to go with this team? Do we want to keep playing the “deferment” game we started last season, and pile more money onto next years cap? Do we try to bring back most of the players from last year in order to try to give it one last go with these guys before they ride off into the sunset? Well, I have been back and forth on this for a while now. The Jaromir Jagr question has bugged me a lot these past few days. Do we bring him back, or do we let him walk? There are pros and cons to each side of the argument. On the one hand, bringing back your best player is never a bad move. On the other hand, he is going to cost us a whole lot of bling, not to mention his puck possession style of hockey does not work for the rest of our core players, namely Gomez and Drury, who seem to be far more suited to an offense based off the rush. I don’t like the idea of once again going into a regular season with no clearly defined offensive approach, as Renney loves to simply let the players do whatever they want in their own zone, with no structure associated with what they do.

With all that said, I think we need to make 2 different contingency plans. Plan 1 will be if Jaromir Jagr is willing to come back for $5 million dollars, 3 of which is deferred to next years cap. Plan 2 will be if Jaromir Jagr is unwilling to come back for that amount. Since I plan on making them pretty similar lineups, I will post plan one, with details, then I will just post plan 2’s lines, without any explanation, since you can pretty much figure out what I am doing.

Now, we have Jagr on the first line right wing, we need a left winger for him. Before anyone says Marty Straka, let me just say. NO. Sorry, NO. If Jagr refuses to come back without Straka, then its time to cut the cord with both of them. I love what Straka does on the ice. He is tenacious, fast, responsible, etc. But what he is not, is worth the money he gets paid. We have a handful of players, especially Lauri Korpikoski and Freddy Sjostrom, who can play exactly the same way Straka does, at less than 1/3rd of the cap hit. My first line left winger is the guy who should have been the first line left winger in the playoffs. Sean Avery. He absolutely 100% MUST be back. My price for him is 3.5Million dollars. Leaving 8.5 Million dollars off the table for next year, but a first line finished. Total dollars still left to spend: 14.872+3Mil deferred=17.872 Mil

For the second line we have a problem. Scotty Gomez needs a winger who can score. He needs a guy who can take those passes he makes off the rush and puts them in the net. The first choice on the left side is obviously Nigel Dawes, the RFA. He made 496k last year, I think a bump to 1Mil even is a fair raise for the kid. On the right side, I say we go in a different direction and bring in some outside help. My pick? Kristian Huselius. Although he plays the left wing, I can see him sliding in just fine on Gomezs right side, while finally providing Gomez 2 guys who can keep up with him speed wise, and can shoot the puck and play his game. Estimated cap hit, 3Million dollars. The second line is now taken care of. 17.872 - 4Mil = 13.872 left

The 3rd line is a pretty easy line to fill. I’d keep it exactly how I have it listed there, Prucha Drury and Callahan. 3 guys who are tenacious, 3 guys who can skate well, and 3 guys who play a similar North American get pucks to the net, and shoot shoot shoot type of game. I know the general consensus among Ranger fans is that Prucha is done. I beg to differ. Give him regular time, and I think you will be surprised with what he can do. The 3rd line is taken care of, with no additional cap hit.

The 4th line right now reads Betts with no wingers. I say we finish with a trio of guys who can skate, play a nice cycle game, and all 3 are capable of putting in goals with no stone hands among them. Instead of going with a brute force line, or an energy line, I want a line that can help us win some games by either playing a strict shut down style, or by scoring. Putting Sjostrom with Betts and Korpikoski let’s you do just that. The 3 can all play all 3 zones fairly well, with Korpikoski gaining the experience to help him improve his game much like Dubinsky did last year when he started on the 4th line. I figure Sjostrom gets a raise from 775k to 1.25 mil, and Korpedos hit is 1 mil. 4th line is taken care of. Total cap hit, 2.25 additional. 13.872-2.25=11.622 Mil left.

Lets take care of the backup goalie situation since that is easy as hell to do as well. Bring back Vally, give him a modest raise from 617k to 775k. 11.622-.775=10.847 Mil

This leaves us with 3 regular defenseman we need to fill. I am going to assume Paul Mara enjoyed his tenure here enough to come back at a slight discount in salary because lets face it, he is not a 3 million dollar defenseman anymore. He gets 2 million, and if he won’t take it, we can sign any of a dozen unrestricted free agent defenseman who play an above average game. We bring in yet another kid to play on the 3rd pairing with Mara. I wanted to say it would be Baranka, but he signed with Russia, and may, or may not, even bother trying to make this team. It will be either him, or Potter. Let’s assume the bigger cap hit gets applied, which is roughly .525Mil leaving us with 1 defenseman to fill and 8.322 million dollars to spend. Now here is where one can easily say we should have spent the cash on Marian Hossa. And I can understand that. Spend on a guy who is easily worth that kind of money, and build a franchise for the long term. But we will come across the same problem that has plagued this team since the lockout. No puck moving defenseman. Nobody on the team from the back line that can genuinely scare the crap out of the opposition with their offensive skill. Nobody to lead the charge from the back line on the futile power play. Not to mention a blueline that desperately needs a little bit of high end depth to work with. I say we go for it and sign Wade Redden. Why not Campbell? Because I feel he will get at least 7 million bucks on the open market, and I do NOT want to have another 7 million dollar contract on my hands. I think Wade Redden is just the guy we need, and although we have heard a lot of crap about him since Chara left, I still feel he is an elite defenseman who is just in a funk and needs a change of scenery. Wade made 6.5Mil last year coming off of a statistically low year for him. I think he can be had for 5.5-6.5 mil, and although that is a lot of money, I like my chances with him. Give him no more than a 5 year deal (taking him till he is 35 years old), and call it a day.

Final Roster:

Avery - Dubinsky - Jagr
Dawes - Gomez - Huselius
Prucha - Drury - Callahan
Sjostrom - Betts - Korpikoski
Orr (For teams with legit heavyweights)

Staal - Redden
Tyutin - Girardi
Mara - Baranka/Potter
Pock

Lundqvist
Valliquette

Now, if we can’t bring back Jagr, I think we go in a different direction. Bring in Ryan Malone for 4.5Mil, and bring in Brooks Orpik for 4 Million (Yes, the cap works, and there is no money being rolled over).

The lineup would be the same, except Orpik in for Redden, and Malone in for Jagr.

Whew, is there anyone still with me? Probably not, but in case you are, thanks for reading this. I plan on leaving this post up for at least a week, which will likely give you just enough time to read it from start to finish.

What’s On Tap?

Posted by inferno272 on May 10th, 2008

Just a little FYI. Here is my plan for the offseason. Within the next few days I plan on doing a season recap, and in depth analysis on the players we currently have with my personal thoughts on who we should keep, and who we should let go.

Then a few days after that, I will give me thoughts on what I would like next years roster to look like (likely I will have 3 or 4 different scenarios) and then I will be doing some draft stuff. Once that is over I will figure out what I want to do next. I don’t think I am going to do the player examinations that I did last year to the extent of having charts and the like, but I will do something on all the players, thats for sure.

Reexamining A Few Old Issues…

Posted by inferno272 on May 9th, 2008

When I wrote this piece back in November, and its follow up piece here, there were quite a few people who were interested, but wanted to see the numbers redone at the end of the season. So, here it is.

Similarly in this piece there was a chart comparing the production of our 7 million dollar forwards to all the other 7 million dollar forwards I could remember. Here are the updated results:

Being a stat lover I rank them by the equalized numbers rather than actual production so you know how valuable the player is when healthy. But even ranking them by actual production all it does is improve the ranking of Scotty Gomez by 1 and drop Sid the Kid by 2 spots, but nobody in their right mind would take Gomez over Sidney.

There you have it friends, weve got 2 players that are definitely on the overpaid end of things. Are the contracts worth it? Well, I’ll let you make that call.

Why Tom, WHY!?!?!?

Posted by inferno272 on May 5th, 2008

If you’ve been speaking with me since the Rangers demise, you know the one thing that has been pissing me off to no end about our playoff loss, has been the fact that Tom Renney did not even once attempt the previously successful combinations of:

Avery - Dubinsky - Jagr
Dawes - Gomez - Shanahan
Straka - Drury - Callahan

Granted, Avery was hurt with 2 games to go, but it still bears some discussion. Because it wasn’t just in the playoffs where Tom didn’t try this combination. He did not attempt them for one period of any game following Scott Gomez’s comeback from his injury of 1 game.

Anyway, here is my “dissertation” (as the NYRangersCast love to remind me) of why this has bugged me so much.

The lines were put together on Feb 13th
http://rangers.lohudblogs.com/2008/02/13/hold-that-champagne/

From Feb 16th to March 25 the Rangers played 17 games.

During that time Avery had 9 goals, 5 assists for 14 points
Dubinsky had 4 goals and 10 assists for 14 points
Jagr had 5 goals and 11 assists for 16 points.

Top line production: 44 points

Nigel Dawes had 4 goals and 6 assists, for 10 points
Scotty Gomez had 3 goals and 9 assists for 12 points
Brendan Shanahan had 5 goals and 7 assists for 12 points

2nd line production: 34 points

Martin Straka had 3 goals and 11 assists for 14 points
Chris Drury had 5 goals and 6 assists for 11 points
Ryan Callahan had 6 goals and 2 assists for 8 points

3rd line production: 33 points

Total goals scored by the entire team during that time span: 51 (not counting shootouts, counting shootouts it becomes 55)
Total goals allowed by the entire team during that time span: 35 (with shootouts it becomes 38)

Average goals scored per game: 3
Average goals allowed per game: 2.06

In short, the team was playing great offense, the team was playing great defense, and MOST IMPORTANTLY the degree of separation between the first lines production, and second & third lines production was much smaller than it was during the playoffs.

In the playoffs:
First line production: 33 points (10 games)
Second line production: 23 points (10 games, 8 for avery)
Third line production: 14 points (10 games)

in much fewer games the degree of separation was drastic, if you extrapolate these to the same amount of games played, the difference in points between the first line and 3rd line becomes 32 points. Whereas between the first and 3rd in the first scenario the point differential was only 11 points.

What does all this number crunching mean?

We became a 1 line threat in the playoffs. We became so dependent on 1 line dominating the other team, that if you could shut them down (like the Pens did in game 5) the Rangers stood little to no chance of winning.

More importantly the team played much better in both ends of the ice with the first scenario.

We scored 31 goals in the playoffs in 10 games, thats 3.1 goals for per game.

We allowed 27 goals for in the playoffs. A gigantic rise in goals against (and before you say its because we faced the potent pens, remember, the Devils, an offensive inept team scored 12 goals against us, for a 2.4gaa, not good when playing a terrible team like that). 2.7 goals allowed on average is awful for the playoffs where scoring is usually drastically lower than in the regular season.

In short, with the lines placed the other way, we were a multi threat offense. You couldnt shut down just one line, because any of the 3 could light you up. Furthermore, because all 3 could play for long stretches in the offensive zone, the other teams had less time in our zone, and therefore we had to defend less.

Would it have translated 1:1 in the playoff? God only knows. But the fact that Tom Renney didn’t even try, not even once, really pisses me off to no end.

Playoff Grades

Posted by inferno272 on May 4th, 2008

Before I do my post game, and really a post series wrap (tomorrow, Im spent today) I wanted to share with you my playoff grades for the team.

Goal:
Lundqvist:A-. In a postseason where he got very little support, he stood tall. Only game 3 stands out as an un-Henrik like performance.

Defense:
Roszival: C-. Didnt do anything worthy of signing his huge contract.
Giradi: B+ Pretty good, but getting called for 2 penalty shots wont win you any prizes with me.
Tyutin: F- Atrocious doesnt even begin to state how bad he was.
Staal: A+++++++++++++++++ Seriously, What more can you want from the kid?
Strudwick: C He is what he is.
Backman: F—– Even worse than Tyutin. Yikes.
Mara: B- Good series. I liked his attitude after game 4.

Offense:
Avery:B- Invisible against Pittsburgh, but superb against the Devils.
Betts: D+ He was playing hurt, even before he got the facial injury. And his play definitely showed it.
Jagr: A+++++++++++++ A legend tried to carry an entire team on his shoulders, and nearly did just that.
Callahan: C- After the Devils series, he wasnt completely 100% invisible. I hardly noticed him on the ice.
Drury: B+ Didnt come through in the scoresheet, but did everything else you could possibly ask from him, including gutting it out while clearly hampered with a rib injury.
Gomez: D- How many times can you try to go one on 5 and turn it over before you realize its not friggin working?!
Dawes: D+ Outside of one good play, he was utterly invisible. I didnt even realize he was out there for most of this series.
Prucha: C- After not playing any legit minutes in months and months, hes expected to come in and be a difference maker. Sorry, hockey doesnt work like that.
Straka: D How many times can you overpass or completely miss on a shot? Hes a 3rd liner right now, nothing more.
Sjostrom: C+ I liked what I saw. Perfect 4th line winger.
Korpikoski: A+ Small sample size, but I love what I saw from him.
Hollwegg: F—————————————— Single handedly lost us this series in game 3.
Orr: D- non factor.
Dubinsky: A Absolutely love what I saw from the kid, and hes only going to get better. Id love to see him and AA play on the same line sometime.
Shannahan: F- He was finished long before these playoffs started.

Coaching:
Renney: F- I dont give a crap what anyone here says. To not even TRY the combinations of:
Avery Dubinsky Jagr
Dawes Gomez Shanahan
Straka Drury Callahan

When we knew how effective they were AS AN ENTIRE TEAM (not just 1 line) was absolutely disgusting. Id give Renney a B- if he at least attempted those combinations even once during the playoffs. But no, not even a sniff of those combinations. DISGUSTING
Assistants: F- How pitiful can a Power Play be? Let me count the ways…

Live Blog - Rangers@Penguins Game 5…

Posted by inferno272 on May 4th, 2008

-Puck is only a few minutes from dropping. I’m nervous (when am I not?!). I woke up this morning with a bad feeling about this one.

-HAHA, that bridgestone commercial is hilarious.

-BTW, if Korpedo is in, I give it 2 enthusiastic thumbs up. We need the footspeed and the defensive responsibility on that line.

-Wow, that was some intense pressure by the Pens.

-Wow, amazing defense by Chris Drury.

-Rangers giving up a lot in their own zone. This is not the kind of game they want to play.

-*sigh* Jaromir, you know better.

-Korpedo! Good second shift. Nice shot there, almost powered it through Fleury.

-Tell me again, which team was on the PP there?

-Once the Rangers fail on this PP (comon, you know they arent going to score) you gotta keep an eye out for Malkin coming outta the box.

-YOU HAVE TO BURY THAT SHOT NIGEL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

-The Pens had way too many super high quality chances in that period. From the Rangers perspective it wasn’t a good period because they gave up so damn much defensively. They need to be much better in containment, and in clearing the zone when they get the chance. Offensively they had a few very good chances, but MAF made the saves he had to. None particularly difficult, because we keep shooting the friggin puck wide.

-Wow, Hossa with a choke job out there.

-Shoulda been a 4 minute minor on Malone, instead, no call.

-Jagr takes 2 penalties, and draws 2 penalties. Not good giving this team so many damn chances, especially with your 2 best PKers out (drury getting stitched, betts hurt)

-Good pressure there.

-This PP is just sickening.

-I need to see that replay, Malkin went down awfully easy.

-That was definitely a penalty, but Malkin helped it. And they bury it. It was only a matter of time.

-Rozsival takes ANOTHER penalty. Thanks scumbag.

-WHAT A SAVE BY HENRIK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

-Henrik absolutely standing on his head.

-Thats it, game over, series over, season over. *sigh*

-Ill say it again. This series was lost when Ryan Hollweg took that penalty. He doesnt take that penalty, this series is 2-2 right now.

-Hahahaha, they did an edit-undo on an obvious penalty.

-Rozsival, the goat of this game.

-Complain about the reffing all you want, but if you can’t score on the PP, does it even matter?

-KORPIKOSKI!!!! OH BABY YOU KNOW HES MAKING THIS TEAM NEXT YEAR!

-TIE GAME!!! THE KIDS COME THROUGH!!!!

-Wow, what a turn of events. Win or lose, you have to be proud of the way this team has battled back.

-Doc keeps calling every player with a 2 on their jersey Korpikoski.

-Tyutin missing the net. How often do you say that in a game?

-This 3rd period has showed a ton of heart by the Rangers.

-Pens go on the PP. Not a good feeling about this.

-Overtime. Pens still have nearly 3 minutes of PP time. Ugh ugh ugh ugh ugh.

-Simply a spectacular period by the Rangers. Theres no other way to say it. Tom Renney lit a fire under his teams ass, and they game through big time. Win or lose, Im really proud of the heart that was shown in that period.

-Prediction, Pens win it on a goal from Sykora. :(

-Big saves by Henrik.

-Overpassing by Staal nearly cost us.

-Wow, Rangers killed it. Im shocked.

-All Pens right now.

-Marian Hossa, coming up empty in the playoffs as usual.. *sigh*

1 Down - Penguins@Rangers Game 4 Post Game Thoughts…

Posted by inferno272 on May 2nd, 2008

So there are a few things that we need to talk about in this game. Let’s start with the first, less obvious thing. Why on earth was Ryan Hollweg in the lineup? I mean, seriously, can anyone give me one good reason? Not having healthy bodies isn’t a good reason, because there are 10 kids from Hartford who can play at any moment. Ryan Hollweg disgraced the jersey by selfishly costing his team a game. Only Tom Renney could put him right back into the lineup like that (which by the way I predicted correctly over on the ECSF message boards). Personally, I dress Hutchinson and have him be a 7th defenseman, and run your PP. Then double shift a center (Dubi and Gomez) with the 4th line during one of their few shifts. Let’s not be fooled by the 2 for 7 the Rangers had on the Power Play. Dubinskys goal was a softie. It wasn’t a “garbage goal”, it wasn’t a flukey goal, it was a soft goal that most goalies just don’t give up. The other goal was an empty netter, so that doesn’t count at all. Other than that the Rangers were entirely ineffective at generating much in the way of chances. Hell, they didn’t even spend much time set up, period. They had trouble entering the zone, and continued with their slow, methodical passing game. I was not happy with the PP whatsoever, and some fresh blood, particularly from a PP specialist, could help awaken this club.

Next, Jaromir Jagr. Personally, I sign the guy right now. I know I called for him to be traded earlier this year, but it wasn’t because I wanted him gone, it was because I thought the team was done, and he could no longer help us, and therefore would net a huge return. The guy is an absolute monster out there. He looks like he could beat the other team single handedly, thats how amazing he is playing. Looking at the woefully pathetic free agent market that is out there right now outside of Marian Hossa, I would give Jagr a 1 year, 7.5-8 million dollar deal without any hesitation whatsoever. Hell, I might even go for 2 years if thats what it takes. If you let Straka, Shanny and Malik go, and replace them with cheaper players, you can make it work easily, even while keeping the rest of the players you need. The guy wants it. Badly. As long as he wants to come back here, I would do everything under the sun to make sure it happens.

Then of course there is Henrik Lundqvist. The guy took a lot of crap so far this series, because hes given up 5 goals twice. However he has yet to have given up a soft goal, and has been just spectacular in 3 of the 4 games so far. His numbers are very artificially low because of 1)not getting any bounces go his way, unlike Fleury, and 2)he’s playing against a frighteningly talented team in the Penguins. Henrik was on today, and you knew we had a good shot at winning this one in a low scoring affair. To get this to game 6, hes going to need to be even better (even better than a shutout!) in game 5.

We haven’t accomplished anything yet. All we did was extend our life for another few days. The key to this series is game 5. If you win game 5, you know they won’t lose game 6 at home. Then you’re heading into game 7 with the Penguins having lose 3 in a row, and on the verge of blowing a 3-0 lead twice in franchise history. Of course if the Rangers lose game 5, the series is over. This next one is everything. As good as the Rangers were today, to a man, they need to be better on Sunday.

-And the puck drops.

-Straka, misses the puck at point blank range with a glorious chance to score a goal. Great…

-Penalty on the Rangers, great way to start.

-Good call btw.

-Heh, Ryan Hollweg is in. Why am I not surprised.

-Tremendous defensive play by the much maligned Tyutin. Rangers on the PP, might as well decline it.

-how the F does the ref not blow the whistle there?!?!?!?!?!

-Staal having a nightmare of a game so far.

-Wheres the call?!?!?!

-HIT! THE! EFFING! NET!!!!!

-OK Period by the Rangers. You get the feeling this is a game they are going to win, but it won’t be pretty.

-I love Marty Straka, but man oh man you gotta be kidding me on some of the non plays he is making.

-Rangers are getting their chances, but they cant buy a goal.

-Shoulda been a trip on Malkin, Rangers shoulda had a 2 man advantage. Grr.

-Having a heated debate over on the NYRangersCast live blog with Michael. My point is, instead of dressing Hollweg, ag guy who hurts your team, dress Andrew Hutchinson as a 7th defenseman, and have him run the point on the PP, and only play situationally like that. Seriously, after watching this pathetic PP, how can anyone not feel that is an idea worth at least trying?

-OHHHH BABY< WHAT A MOVE BY JAGR aand he is down, NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

-Pretty clean hit, cant complain about it.

-Ahh, turning around is too difficult of a play for Struds.

-Jagr! Clap Clap, Jagr! Clap Clap, Jagr! Clap Clap, Jagr! Clap Clap, Jagr! Clap Clap, Jagr! Clap Clap, Jagr! Clap Clap, Jagr!

-Christ, our point men are just spectacular out there.

-barely touched him, i dont see how he went barreling into him from a slight shove.

-No goal, which is good, but he get s apenalty shot. ugh.

-Ugh, comon Henrik!!!

-SAVE wow, what the hell was Malkin doing there?!

-superb defense there.

-Prucha draws the penalty (i think)

-Power play just murdering this team.

-BTW, anyone who thinks Tom Renney, the head coach of this team, has zero input on how th epower play is run, is really kidding themselves. Anyways, pretty good period. Just gotta play a good 3rd. End of story.

-29 minutes of strong hockey. Thats all I want.

-DOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOBZILLA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

-Oh my, what a save by Henrik!

-2 terrible turnovers in this game by Girardi.

-Rangers have the hockey gods on their side tonight. No idea how Sykora missed a wide open net like that…Musta been using Strakas stick.

-Score here, and this game is going back to Pittsburgh.

-Great hit there by Girardi. Physical play is huge, Rangers have been lacking it big time.

-Gotta kill this one. Henrik really deserves the shutout.

-Thats the game, this one is going back to Pittsburgh! Thank God, at the very least, the Rangers aren’t going to lose another series on their home ice tonight.

-End of live blog. I’ll post more later.

Get Better Sean

Posted by inferno272 on April 30th, 2008

As you know by now, Sean Avery suffered a lacerated Spleen, and possibly was in cardiac arrest (I have read conflicting reports about that). Sean is a fighter. He’s going to be a-ok, and, God willing, will be a Ranger for the rest of his career.

Numb - Penguins@Rangers Game 3 Post Game Thoughts…

Posted by inferno272 on April 29th, 2008

I swear to God, it feels like someone kicked me in the nuts as hard as humanly possible right now. Last year, I was pretty OK after the Drury goal against us. Right now I feel like I am unable to process human emotion. This is so much worse because we lost because of our own player (Ryan Hollweg) not because of a herculean effort by the other team.

UPDATE:

Ok, so here I am, a few hours after the fact, and I am still numb, but I’m going to power through this. I think this game came down to a few big things, and one huge thing. Lets start with the big things. The Rangers had 2 chances on 2 separate 5 on 3’s and didn’t score a goal. No team, particularly one struggling to score with the man up, can feel good about their game after that. Not scoring on 5 on 3’s is as bad as being scored on. It deflates you, and really kills your momentum. Next, but not in game chronological order, Marty Straka shanked a puck 4 feet wide with a completely 100% wide open net that could have notted the game at 1 early. Yeah he redeemed himself later, but Id like to think that could have given us a 2-1 lead, rather than being a redeemer.

Then you have Henrik Lundqvist. I am not going to kill the guy, because I think all the goals he gave up were tough shots to stop, perhaps shots he had no chances on. With that said he didn’t make a single game changing stop. Its the argument I usually steer clear from because I’m not a big believer in your goalie having to steal you wins, especially in a series where he has been flat out spectacular. People love to kill him, and some people love to give him the benefit of the doubt. Perhaps I am in the latter group, but with that said, I wish Henrik had stopped one or 2 of those goals. Maybe he should have, maybe he shouldnt have, but I don’t think he made a single spectacular save in the game. And we just arent good enough to win if that is the case.

Now, the huge thing. You all know what it is. Ryan Hollweg. He cost us the game, the series, and the season all in one, epically idiotic play. The Rangers have all the momentum in the world. ALL OF IT. They had just scored 2 goals, rang one off the pipe, had the puck in the Penguins zone for what seemed like a month and a half, and what happens? The same thing that has happened at least twice before this year. Ryan Hollweg, caught up in the emotion of trying to make a play, takes a terrible boarding penalty (that was clear as day, its an inarguable call) which takes all of our momentum, hands it to the Pens, and effectively kills our season. Remember, its not about the eventual goal we gave up, its about the complete loss of momentum on one play.

Do you have any doubts, any whatsoever, that if Hollweg doesnt take that penalty, we go on to win this game? I know I don’t. The way the Rangers, and more importantly Jagr were playing, it was only a matter of time. I know it, you know it, everyone knows it. Then, on one play, it was all over. Gone, another defeat snatched from the jaws of victory.

And this is bad guys, this hurts, this hurts a whole lot. Like I said earlier, this hurts more than the Drury goal, because it wasn’t another team beating us (imho). It was one of our own players sabotaging our entire game on a reckless play he has done a quite a few times before. I’m not going to get on Renney here, because that argument will come on a later day. But you do have to question Renneys decision making in putting him on the ice at that point in time. I understand the thought process. Ryan gives energy, he can skate, he can hit, maybe he can keep the pressure going. But when you have the other team on their heels like that, you don’t put on your offensive inept grinder out there. You put in your scorers, to keep applying offensive zone pressure, till the other team cracks.

Ryan Hollweg. Goodbye, I never want to see you in Rangers blue ever again.
